Part graphic novel, part lithography, and complete entertainment material. <br />Mark was gracious enough to share not just some of his thoughts about writing the book, but also a few of the linos that he worked through during the journey. </b></div><div><b> </b></div><div><b>While Let Go is entirely wordless, we're glad Mark was able to share his journey in "writing" the book, in words. </b></div><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>Advertising professionals will relate to this story </b></div><div><b>A story about the universal feeling of being Let Go. The heartbreak. the </b></div><div><strong><br /></strong></div><div><strong><br /></strong></div><div><strong>Q: What do you want readers to take away from your book?</strong><br /><br />A: From the outset, I wanted the reader to feel happy and reassured after finishing <em>Let Go</em>.<br />Now, to reach the end of any book, the reader must be entertained, engaged, and cheering for the main characters.<br /><br />As the narrative for <em>Let Go</em> took shape, I looked forward to the book immersing readers in a life that spans significant societal changes and how we live. <em>Let Go</em> is a way to reach a new generation of creators who are exposed to a relentless barrage of negativity. They may feel forgotten but it's my hope that <em>Let Go</em> reassures them that living the creative life is worth the struggle.<br /><br />All that said, I hope readers of <em>Let Go</em> take away something I never originally intended. Something that is unique and significant to the reader's own experiences.<br /><br /></div><div><strong>Q: How long did the process take?</strong> </div><div>A: In the spring of 2015, George Walker gathered several visual storytellers and proposed an anthology of Canadian short wordless narratives. My 10-page wordless narrative was written on the same page as my meeting notes. I'm guessing that I wrote few meeting notes and wrote the story points the next day on the same sheet.<br /><br />By 2016, other artists had left the project for a variety of reasons. To fill the book, my original short story of 10-15 blocks was expanded to 45 then 60 blocks. George finally proposed that if I could write a 90-block story, they'd publish it separately. Extending the story took at least 4 months. I was working fulltime at the healthcare division of Ogilvy advertising and would write on the streetcar during my commute.<br /><br /><br />Over the months I developed a streamline workflow:<br />1. Rough sketch<br />2. Final illustration<br />3: Scan image and reverse<br />4: Print image in blue<br />5: Trace reversed image to linoblock<br />6: Carve linoblock<br />7: Print linoblock<br />8: Scan print and send to publisher<br /><br />Carving the blocks took the most time. My experience with linocut was zero. But I can draw and was told just to transfer my illustrations to the linoblocks and someone else would cut them. After the pictures were drawn, George suggested I carve a block of my own. I did and liked the result. George liked what he saw too and encouraged me to carve them all.<br /><br />I got a little more time to spend on <em>Let Go</em> in 2017 when I was let go from Ogilvy. While looking for work is fulltime job in itself, the process working on <em>Let Go</em> gained momentum. In early 2019, the first covid lockdown came to the rescue by allowing me to isolate in my studio and finish carving and printing the blocks. In early spring of 2020, the prints were scanned and delivered to The Porcupine's Quill press for printing. Sudden prairie blizzards would blow in so hard and cold, you could barely breathe. People who were trapped by the storm in the city after the shops closed would often find a cardboard box—or grab one that blew into them—and put it over their head. They'd cut a slit in it and keep walking. The box would calm the air around the face allowing them to breathe. This became the dominant visual element in <em>Let Go</em>.<br /><br />Boxhead Man was the central figure in the short story version of <em>Let Go</em>. I just needed 10-15 blocks that were visually interesting and supported the concise narrative arc: Guy in storm. Puts box over head, peering out through a slit. Reaches home and peers out at storm through a gap in his Venetian blinds.<br />Once the short story extended past 30 pages, the need for a stronger story became obvious.<br /><br />Keep in mind this is my first wordless novel AND published work of fiction. I made a conscious decision to simplify the characters, relationships, and time. That meant instead of the objects reminding the main character of different people or time periods, they would focus on one person who came into his life for a limited time and then disappeared.<br /><br />The main characters memories in <em>Let Go</em> were simply to motivate why he had the object, why it was significant, and the locations that triggered his memory.</div></div><div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"> </div><div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"><strong>Q: Why did you use this particular medium for your art?</strong></div><div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">A: George Walker, the wordless novel acquisitions editor for The Porcupine's Quill press, wanted to create a short story anthology showcasing Canadian author/artists. I had been working on another graphic novel but didn't have a publisher for it. So I decided to work on a short project that was backed by a respected publisher and established editor.<br /><br />As a visual art agnostic, I can work with traditional and digital media. I saw the prospect of learning linocut to tell a wordless story as an opportunity to tell a timely story in a powerful way.<br /><br />As the first blocks for <em>Let Go</em> were carved and printed, I saw how brutally honest and beautifully direct they expressed the narrative. The difference I saw between my final pencil drawings for <em>Let Go</em> and printed proofs was dramatic in every sense of the word. The medium elevated the story and characters of <em>Let Go</em> in ways I never expected.<br /><br /><strong>Q: Any advice you would give for artists?</strong><br />A: Action cures fear. Pitch your stories or exhibit your artwork as often as you can. <br /><br /><strong>Q: Looking back, what did you think about the process? Would you have done anything differently?</strong><br />A: The process for creating <em>Let Go</em> was a challenge due of my own learning curve. Thanks to what I learned working on <em>Let Go</em>, the process for my second wordless novel, <em>Off the Cuff</em>, is much more efficient. <br /><br /><strong>Q: What surprised you the most from the process...perhaps that A-ha moment. </strong></div><span style="font-family: helvetica; font-size: x-small;"><span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">A: In my experience, writing is a rational process; drawing is highly intuitive. I didn't expect that words in print can change meaning when translated as an image to tell a story.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">This resulted in editing or revising story details while drawing or even carving the linoblocks for </span><em style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Let Go</em><span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">. </span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">On a few occasions, I'd be drawing an image for </span><em style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Let Go</em><span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"> from a clearly defined description I wrote. But as I'm drawing it, I include a new element or delete an existing one. Or I see that the picture rings false. So I draw what I believe is the right image. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Place the steaks on the baking sheet, drizzle with salt and pepper. Roast for 30 minutes, or until the core is fork-tender. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br />Break the remainder of the cauliflower into florets (about 2 cups) and bring a medium pot of salted water to a boil. Add the cauliflower florets and the garlic cloves and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, or until fork-tender. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the florets and the garlic to a high-speed blender. Let cool slightly, and then add the 2 tablespoons olive oil, miso paste, lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon water. Puree the mixture, using the blender baton to keep the blade moving or pausing to stir as necessary. If needed, add 1 to 2 tablespoons more water to create a smooth puree. Season to taste.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I've loved Jeanine's easy simple recipes right from the moment I tried them for myself at an event hosted by Chapters Indigo a few years ago. A lot of different combinations of meals...some that will be variations of your favourite comfort foods, and others that will inspire you to try something new.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Love lasagna? Sure you do! Who doesn't? But consider this: lasagna in a soup. Seems an impossible feat, but Jeanine Donofrio has found a way to do just that. After all, sometimes, you just </span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">don't feel like going through the effort of making lasagna, but wouldn't mind the hearty flavours of this comfort food. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The great thing about cookbook recipes is that you are introduced to new flavours of the world, without having to leave your kitchen (except for the grocery store to pick up the ingredients, of course!). I didn't know what muhammara was until I saw a recipe for <i>Beet Muhammara Dip</i>. For those who didn't know either, it's a spiced Middle Eastern red pepper walnut dip, which has hint of fragrant coriander and bold flavours to boot. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Of course, it's not just about the recipes. There's also a learning component associated with LOVE & LEMONS EVERY DAY. For example, there's a section called "Wait - What About Protein?" Here Jeanine tells us about the different plant-based proteins that you can use in preparing a balanced meal for your family. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">What do you do with your broccoli stalks, carrot tops and cauliflower cores? Jeanine Donofrio's attitude is much like mine "Waste not, want not", and so she shares some of her favourite ways to use "scrap parts".<br /><br />If the title of Jeanine Donofrio's cookbook didn't give it away, you should know that all the recipes have that dash of lemon in them. It makes every dish approachable and delectable --and from a health perspective, adding lemon helps reduce the need for salt (sodium) without sacrificing flavour.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It goes without saying, but important to repeat, that none of Jeanine Donofrio's recipes are complicated. In LOVE & LEMONS EVERY DAY, each recipe also comes with a helpful everyday tip, like how a particular recipe can be made quicker (quinoa!), or which salads make great next-day desk lunches (the peach and pole bean salad, and soba salad!). </span><br />

project was introduced to me by a very talented Art Director, Benny Yip from <a href="http://www.la-ads.com/" target="_blank">L.A. Inc.</a> - a branding and marketing agency. They represent real estate and property

team were working on the advertising for Circa who refurbish/renovate existing
low to mid rise properties. The project involved photographing an old beautiful
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_house" target="_blank">Victorian</a> home in the High Park area which was converted and organized into
four condo units.</span></span></div>

were looking for ten shots to complete their brief. This would be a mix of the
space, wide shots and detail shots (vignettes). But not too wide! If you go
super wide on interiors they start looking like MLS shots. There’s a big
difference between real estate photography and interior photography, and i
shoot the latter. It’s stylized, and many days of prepping and organizing props
and furniture and post with retouching.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

location on any given day and start shooting. We do a walk through weeks in
advance and scout seeing through a lens. We take multiple pictures of potential
shots for shoot day. For instance, different angles, focal length, etc.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

are made and then voila, we have our 10 shots confirmed.</span></span><br />

have our shot list, however we now need to style the spaces. This requires a
stylist, not a decorator. Stylists are in the know and have experience with
agencies and understand what’s required to interpret creative. My stylist
would then communicate with the Art Director and present all the props she
believes that would be in line with the art director's vision. He makes requests
for certain props. There is a lot of going back and forth where she would
photograph each prop that she would be using for each room and catalogue them.
Some items are rentals, but mostly purchase and returns. She pulls up on shoot
day with items only which have been approved by the creative team. There are no
surprises! So, here comes a van with art works, towels,
linens, pillows duvets, chairs, books, dishes, fruit, vegetables, rugs, vases,
flowers, trinkets, and list goes on and on. It takes about an hour alone to
bring these items on set before anything gets pulled out and organized into
their shot order.</span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />

show up on shoot day, shortly after the stylist, with my two assistants, as we have
to load in all the equipment and start lighting the first shot. And of course
the shot order has been predetermined following the scout day as I use a mix of
God’s light and strobe for shooting. All the shots have been timed as to how long
it should take to prep and style, set up lighting and shoot. Shooting is a
long day; we were there for about 12 hours start to finish.</span><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: small;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

with the market. I can not see the market ever going down…it’s hot, and really,
we just don’t have enough homes. Condo’s are a great but most people who decide
on a family want something bigger; that’s when things get tricky. Staying in
the city and wanting a home for a growing family is hard to find. So people go
north, or just wait. </span></span></div>
