Love and Lemons Give a Zest for Life

A golden retriever was trotting along a street on the island of Capri. A seemingly normal sight but this one had a lemon in his mouth. Two lovers strolling along the street at the same time saw the dog and joked about the romantic notion that Italians probably play fetch with lemons instead of tennis balls. This was the beginning of a wonderful love story with lemons.

Love & Lemons is a blog that was started by Jeanine Dorofrio and her husband Jack after their trip to Italy in 2008. The country is a part of her ancestry, part of her love story (her husband proposed there that year), and also the beginning of her food story.

I was lucky to be part of a small select group of foodies invited to the Chapters Indigo Office recently to be part of a unique experience with Jeanine Dorofrio. An experience I took along a wonderful foodie friend of mine along for this lovely taste of lemons.

Jeanine demonstrated some of her signature dips, including Edamame Guacomole. Key in the ingredients is of course lemon juice, but also some really simple fresh ingredients such as avocado, Dijon mustard and scallion.

Another delicious (and healthy!) recipe we tried was Grapefruit, Quinoa & Fennel Salad with mint. This refreshing side (or main if you prefer) is a wonderful twist with toasted pine nuts. Absolutely scrumptious.

Did you know you can BLEND your cucumbers in your green juice or smoothie?

Summer Smoothie | Jeanine Dorofrio has her own recipe for a Green Tea Cucumber Smoothie, with coconut milk, apple, banana, spinach and matcha power.

The Love & Lemons cookbook is organized not by breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes. Instead, it's organized by vegetable because Jeanine says,
"you can come home with something beautiful from the farmers market and then figure out what you want to make with it."
Some things are worth waiting for
Jeanine Dorofrio recommends you use local, seasonal produce whenever you can.
